Being overcast that day in Cairo, I struggled to shoot shots with tone. I converted this image into HDR which brought out the tones nicely.

Thames Barrier

The Thames Barrier was built between 1974 and 1982. The barrier's purpose is to prevent London from flooding during a freak high tide moving in from the sea caused by a storm surge.

These photos were taken on the north bank of the river.

The first HDR photo was tone mapped using five different exposures and the others were done using only three. The difference in overall tone and detail is evident.

The last photo had less shadow and highlight smoothing and the colour saturation was reduced.

Are the towers really tilting to the sides? Is it the lens at its widest or is it just me?

Armed with an ultra-wide angle lens and a little photomatix tone mapping post processing brings two images to life. I don't need to point out which are the before and after images, do I?

Today I purchased a Photomatix license key after trying the software. The results are much better than Qtpfsgui.

The first image is without any Photomatix processing and tone mapping.

Photomatix processed.

The same image as above but with some level adjustments using Photoshop.

I will be using Photomatix more in future - the results are fantastic.

High Dynamic Range(HDR)

Recently I did some research on HDR and thought I should give it a try. I used Qtpfsgui freeware. Its an easy application to use but seems a little weak on the processing and I am not very happy with the results.

I used a Raw file saving the same image with different exposure stop settings using Raw Therapee. The first at 0 which is the before picture the second at -2 and the third at +2.
